Contains a brief paragraph of reference to components A and B, how you came across this piece, how it connects to your study of humanities
For assignment A, I researched the Aztec culture, but wanted to broaden my knowledge, so I chose a different culture’s artwork to study. The above piece of art is called the Bonampak mural. I came across this piece by just Goggling pre-columbian art. This relates to our study of humanities because instead of researching everything, we can enjoy the art left behind that depicts stories of the cultures time.
Contains the following analytical elements:
Observation: What do you see in the artwork? What is the subject of the work? What is the work made of? What techniques (colors, lines, shapes, textures)does the artist use? Be specific in your description
It is one of only a few murals, or paintings, to survive the Mayan culture because of the humid weather. This mural dates to 790 CE and is beautiful regarding the subtle colors but the detail is awesome. The subject of the mural depicts scenes of sacrifice and brutality. The mural is on a stone wall and paints were used to color it. The artist mainly draws two-dimensional people.
Interpretation: In one sentence, what is the artwork about? Give specific examples to support this statement.
This artwork depicts the brutal sacrifices that occurred on the culture as a gift to the gods.
Judgement: What led you to choose this work of art? What do you think or feel about this work? Why do you feel this way? Support your thoughts with specific observations.
I chose this piece because I thought this was exquisite because it is rare for a mural to survive centuries and still be preserved well. I think the advanced composition is intriguing but I dislike the subject of the piece. I feel the sacrifices were necessary in the culture as it was their beliefs, but it is unfortunate they thought it to be necessary.
Questioning: What would you like to know about this work? What would you like to know about its history, its subject, or about the artist? When completing the question section, lead your audience into the question by stating a fact you do know, yet you still have the related question. This way, both your audience and you will have an educational experience.
I know this mural is amazing to look at and must have taken ages to paint, so I would like to know how many people painted this mural and how long it took to complete. I would also like to know if the artists were female or male.
